The Police Officer is responsible for patrol in the enforcement of law and order; performs special assignments in the protection of life and property; and does related work as required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Operates a motor vehicle in patrolling an assigned area for the prevention of crime and the enforcement of traffic laws and regulations.

Responds to radio and telephone dispatches and reports to scenes of disorder or crime.  Investigates and prepares reports on accidents, offenses and damage to property.  Gives directions and information, makes arrests, directs traffic, requests medical attention when necessary.  Appears in court as arresting officer or to present evidence.  Transports prisoners, assists in the investigation of crimes, collects and preserves evidence.  Interrogates witnesses and suspects, participants in safety conferences and programs and attends training courses as required by P.O.S.T.  Fingerprints individuals as required.

May be assigned to special functions such as investigations, records, traffic, firing range, dispatch and narcotics.

Minimum Requirements:

Must have the ability to accurately perceive, soundly reason, and correctly judge situations, occurrences and circumstances.  Must be able to express clearly and precisely, orally and in writing.  Must have a great deal of initiative and tendency to actively influence events rather than passively accepting them.  Keen observation and ability to remember names, faces and details of incidents.  Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; ability to learn to use and care for automobiles and the Department’s firearms.  Must have proper degree of stress tolerance, including stability and the ability to perform under pressure.  Must have personality traits conducive to working with superiors, peers, subordinates, and members of the public from all socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.  Must possess the following personality traits; maturity, honesty wisdom, reliability, self discipline, creativity, fortitude, assertiveness, pride in work, initiative, dedication to public service, and problem solving.

Level I Reserve:

A Level I Reserve is available to work in virtually all aspects of the Department.  A Level I can work patrol alone or with a Regular or Reserve partner and has peace officer status while on duty only for the duration of their assignment.
