Coach Selection Process

Swim Team Coaches

Examples of Duties:

Teach skills through effectively planned practices at a level appropriate for each member of the team. Organize the players to participate in games and coach them during games.
*     Work with parents and to communicate openly.
*     Supervise the players before, during, and immediately after practices and games.
*     Provide a safe and enjoyable environment for all players giving each child an equal opportunity to play.
*     Communicate with the League Coordinator and Recreation Department.
*     Serve as a positive role model to the players, parents, officials, and fellow coaches; 
*     Follow rules.
*     Demonstrate good sportsmanship.

Qualifications:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and skills of the sport being coached.

A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

Education –Must be at least 15 years of age be an assistant coach and 18 years of age to be a head coach.

Experience –Playing and/or officiating games and team sports (basketball, soccer, softball or baseball).

Knowledge of –the sport or activity assigned.

Skills at – Working independently while following oral and written instructions; working cooperatively with others; being neat, orderly and honest; interpreting policies and procedures; handle multiple tasks; provide own transportation; watch and scan patron’s activities and facility area for hazardous activities, materials and equipment.

All Applicants must complete a Coaches application form and submit a copy of their drivers license and social security card for the background check. All applicants 18 years of age and older must have clearance from the Department of Justice. Fingerprints are done free of charge at the Livingston Police Department. Recreation Department staff will screen applications and those applicants meeting the qualifications will be contacted.

If a coach does not pass the background check or is not cleared by the Department of Justice they will receive a letter from the Chief of Police with his recommendation.

If there is any history of violence or sexual abuse applicants will be turned down.

It is the goal of the Recreation Department to provide a safe environment for our children.
